Hainan Coconut Carving

Popular mainly in Haikou and Wenchang, this technique features the carving of coconut shells into handicrafts.

The practice could be dated back to the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907). When Su Dongpo, a great poet in the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279), was deposed to Dan’er (Today’s Zhonghe Town in Danzhou City), he asked a local artist to carve coconut shell into a rimless hat for him. Since the early 1900s, coconut handicrafts have been commonly used as gifts and utensils. Before the outbreak of the War against Japanese Aggression, Hainan coconut handicrafts were sold to Southeast Asia and Europe and even won the First Prize at the International Specialties Fair held in Hanoi, Vietnam.
