Color Wood Carving

Popular mainly in Chengmai of Hainan, color wood carving features the carving of tree roots, driftwood or wood fossil into colorful handicrafts such as deity figures.

This technique could be dated back to the Song Dynasty (960 – 1276), when Buddhism and Taoism were prosperous and called for artistic creations for rituals and ceremonies. The figures carved are household names in Chinese mythology or history. Each piece of work is a result of impressive ingenuity and craftsmanship and could be presented to express goodwill.
